Scylla Liscombe Biography

Scylla Liscombe is a poet, dancer, and artist born in Boston, Massachusetts and a graduate of Radford University (B.S. in Dance). She lives in Sarasota, Florida and is co-founder and executive director of SOULSPEAK/SOULMOVES, Inc., a non-profit organization established to promote poetry and dance in collaboration with other arts, both traditional and healing. Ms. Liscombe is the originator, along with Justin Spring, of SOULSPEAK, a contemporary version of ancient oral poetry. She is a featured poet with the spontaneous spoken poetry group MANY VOICES OF SOULSPEAK and is the originator of SOULMOVES, a spontaneous free-flowing dance performance program dedicated to releasing the “inner dancer. Ms. Liscombe also creates unique mixed-media art works.

Dance

Founder of SOULMOVES, Ms. Liscombe has created a spontaneous and beautiful method of moving from a deep spiritual place that helps to rejuvenate and heal the spirit. Her dance expresses and embodies the mood of the moment in an innovative, subtle, and creative manner. She is featured at colleges, cafés, art galleries, theatres, festivals, and events of all kinds, including Sarasota Film Festival, Festival Diapente, Theatre Odyssey, and White on State. Her dance also appears in the audio/visual poetry videos: More Poetry in Three Dimensions, Audio/Visual Poems Vol. I, Audio/Visual Poems Vol. II, Soul Exposures, and Poetry of the Women of Sarasota.

Ms. Liscombe is the editor of the Sarasota Poetry Theatre Press, which she founded in 1996 as part of SOULSPEAK/SOULMOVES. She has published: 21 poets including nationally known poets Dana Curtis, Jessica Jordan Nudel, Madelon Sprengnether, and internationally, Adrianne Kalfoupoulou (Greece); 21 titles from therapeutic SOULSPEAK programs (at-risk children and adults-in-therapy); and two anthologies of at-risk populations. As part of her editorship she has chaired over 35 local and national poetry competitions including the Sarasota Poetry Theatre National Poetry Chapbook Competition, Animals in Poetry Anthology Competition, the Edda Poetry Chapbook Competition for Women, and numerous young poet competitions.

Therapeutic Poetry Programs

Ms. Liscombe has served as assistant director in long term therapeutic programs using a specialized version of SOULSPEAK poetry, a contemporary form of the spoken/musical poetry used by all cultures prior to our learning to read and write. It allows anyone to easily express deep emotions in a beautiful, healing way and has been used conducted with populations inclulding multiple personalities, the sexually and physically abused, pregnant teens, the mentally ill, people in grieving, and at-risk children of every type. Over 3,500 children and adults have taken part in these SOULSPEAK programs including: At-Risk Youth: Gulf Coast Marine Institutes; Cyesis Teen Parent Program; Just for Girls; Pace Center for Girls; Adolescent Recovery Center at Manatee Glens; YMCA Character House; YMCA Triads; Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches; Adults in Therapy: Beacon House Mental Health Community Center; Tammi House for Recovering Alcoholics; Foundation for Rehabilitation of Sexual Trauma; Family Counseling Center; Coastal Behavioral Health Care; TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care.
